How to read the ratings
Solid
Low issue rate across sufficient data. Safe to buy regardless of care method.
Contender
Strong overall with minor, manageable issues. Care method matters.
Inconsistent
Meaningful split in owner outcomes. Some got a great product, others did not.
Avoid
High issue rate across independent reports. Pattern is repeatable, not random.

The Decision Driver
The collection you buy matters more than the brand. Signature and Minimalist owners are overwhelmingly satisfied at 30 to 50 washes with no degradation. Pastel and Love Collection owners are not — 85% and 100% lint rates respectively. Same fabric, same price, completely different post-purchase experience. Before you buy any Comfrt piece, identify which collection it is. That answer determines whether your $130 holds up or starts shedding after three washes.

The style you choose matters enormously. The Define Jacket has zero shrinkage across 64 units including owners washing weekly since 2012. The Steady State shrinks on 67% of units — including on cold wash air dry — making it a material problem not a care method problem. If you are buying a Scuba, buy vintage or size up on recent purchases. A 2022 material shift is confirmed by multiple independent owners with pre and post pieces.

Post-2022 pieces show meaningfully higher shrinkage and fading. Multiple owners with pieces from both eras confirmed the shift independently without knowing each other.
The 2022 cutoff is the clearest signal in this dataset. Multiple owners confirmed the shift with pre and post pieces. Darker colorways fade over time regardless of care. Waffle Scuba is a notable exception with zero shrinkage or fading.
Since 2022 I have purchased 23 full zip Scubas and had to size up. Same issues across all of them. My older ones from 2013 have been washed a million times and held up completely fine.

The highest-risk style in the dataset. 67% shrinkage rate — and cold wash air dry did not protect against it. Multiple independent owners reported shrinkage on gentle care only. That makes this a material problem, not user error. At $118 to $138 the data does not support this purchase.
Unlike the Scuba where shrinkage is concentrated in dryer users, the Steady State shows shrinkage even on cold wash air dry. Neck and hem distortion also reported.

Carhartt is in this dataset as a benchmark, not a direct competitor. Zero fading across all 8 units — the cleanest fading record of any brand in the dataset. The Align pilling finding is counterintuitive and actionable. Among owners who wash on warm and machine dry, pilling is near zero. Among owners who wash on delicate and air dry, pilling rate is high. 88 coded units from 30 owners — the deepest legging dataset we have. Zero shrinkage across all units. 60% pilling rate overall. Owners who wash warm and machine dry report dramatically lower pilling than those who wash delicate and air dry. Multiple owners at 6 and 7 years of weekly use.
The working explanation: heat remelts surface microfibers back into the fabric, while delicate washing leaves them free to tangle and pill.
I have probably 15 pairs spanning from first release to a couple months old. I wash them all on regular warm and throw them in the dryer. No pilling.

The methodology behind every number
Every score on this site is built from unit-level coding of real owner reports. Each individual product owned by each individual owner is coded as its own unit, and each observable attribute is recorded as a separate data point. One comment from someone who owns three collections generates multiple coded units and multiple data points per unit.
This is how professional consumer research firms code qualitative data. It lets us calculate real incidence rates. 40 shrinkage observations out of 200 Minimalist data points is a 20% shrinkage rate. That is a defensible statistic, not an impression.

Four gates every data point passes
01
Authenticity check
We exclude non-owners and promotional signals. If someone cannot demonstrate actual ownership through specific product and experience details, they are excluded.
02
Sufficient information check
We exclude data points that cannot be coded across at least two attributes. Vague reports do not count. "I love it" is not a data point.
03
Temporal relevance check
We limit scoring to a rolling 24-month window. Old data reflects old products. The manufacturing change signal in Scuba and Pastel was only surfaced because we separate recent from older purchase data.
04
Collection attribution
Every data point is attributed to a specific style or collection, not the brand overall. That is where the real intelligence lives. A brand-level score alone is not useful to a buyer.
